CHARACTER
NAME: Hunk
CANON: Voltron: Legendary Defender
CANON POINT: Post-Season 7
AGE: 19
BACKGROUND: Wiki Entry

PERSONALITY: Hunk is introduced as an anxious (and easily-nauseous) cadet of the Galaxy Garrison, and his adventures throughout the series allow him evolution without much deviation from this initial assessment.

Prior to the discovery of the Blue Lion, Hunk’s seen protesting Lance’s sneaking out of the dorms after curfew… But he goes along with it, anyway. This is a good introduction to a part of his personality that’s highlighted throughout the series. While Hunk’s very cautious, often a voice of reason for the team, his fears rarely ever hinder his actions. While he’s quick to voice concerns and protests, while his expressions are often reactionary fear, he stops short of cowardice. This trait is even commented on (and complimented) by Keith in the latter part of the series, in which he expresses admiration for Hunk’s ability to act despite his very open fears.

And what gives him the ability to charge ahead in the face of things that he’s positive can kill him? Love, of course! Hunk’s an Ultimate Friendship Machine, plainly affectionate, supportive, and easy to get along with. Soon after meeting him, Allura designated him as the pilot of the Yellow Lion, significant in that “The Yellow Lion is caring and kind,” and, as a Leg of Voltron, he’s meant to “lift the team up and hold them together,” which… It’s a fair assessment! He fluctuates easily from joking around to offering sound advice or a listening ear. He’s empathetic, crying easily and forming quick bonds. Later in the series, his friendly nature and desire to learn about other cultures allow him to become one of the more diplomatic members of the team, helping to forge alliances and ease tense situations.

He isn’t, of course, without his faults and prickles. The other side of the Coin of Hunk’s Friendliness is his frequent lapses in the respecting of personal boundaries. This includes everything from rifling through people’s things (like Pidge’s backpack, which he even developed pieces of commentary about) to verbal teasing or issue-pressing when it’s obviously unwanted. He can also be petty, single-minded, and is really into getting to say, “I told you so.” While he can be sarcastic and snide, however, he rarely becomes enraged, and he’s largely willing to talk through grievances and accept change in those he’s previously taken issue with.

Hunk’s also a huge fuckin’ nerd, basically. That aforementioned desire to learn about other cultures? It’s part and parcel to his general affinity towards shoving information into his brain. Hunk’s field at the Galaxy Garrison is that of engineering and, upon entering space and becoming involved with alien life and tech, he’s pretty easily able to adapt his skills to become Voltron’s resident mechanic. Where Pidge is the team’s software brain, Hunk is the hardware brain, and they often devolve into jargon-filled technobabble. Hunk’s also shown instances of being able to immediately identify the elemental structure of materials, so he seems to have a good knowledge of chemistry.

Chemistry also comes into play with his second field of vast knowledge… Cooking! Hunk’s a dude who enjoys food beyond consuming it. He’s an artiste~! Along with quickly adapting his mechanical skills to alien tech, Hunk’s on a constant side-quest to learn about the culinary offerings of various locals across the universe. Beyond this being a mere interest, it’s a big part of his emotional expression. He bakes when he’s upset and anxious. He expresses his care for others through meals and connects to his friends and family through memories surrounding food preparation and particular dishes. He’s happy to make others happy through cooking. He even comes to use food as a method of diplomacy, stating that it’s easier to negotiate with people who are full. Food is Hunk’s love language, practically.

Overall, Hunk, although nerve-racked and a bit of a wet blanket at times, is a supportive person with a decent amount of emotional intelligence, for all he’s lacking in certain social graces. He fits his role as Voltron’s leg, supporting Voltron as best he can as both a brother-in-arms and a friend.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Hunk has no extra-human abilities. Nevertheless, he’s capable of pretty legit feats of physical strength (Check them thick limbs!), as well as being well-versed in complicated mechanics and various cuisines. He also has combat training as a member of team Voltron and is able to pilot his lion and wield his weapon, which usually takes the form of a heavy-cover laser canon, efficiently.

INVENTORY: Hunk’ll come in decked out in his Paladin armor, which is yellow-accented, alien-tech plating over a black bodysuit. It includes built-in communication and analytic devices. He’ll also have his bayard, a device that transforms into weaponry suitable to the user. (As is just above… Hunk’s is usually a laser canon. Pew, pew, pew!).

He also has his headband. And maybe underwear? Who knows what’s up under those bodysuits?
