CHARACTER NAME: Hunk
CHARACTER AGE: late teens
SERIES: Voltron: Legendary Defender
CHRONOLOGY: post-Season One
CLASS: Super Heroic Hero
HOUSING: Stick him anywhere!
BACKGROUND:
Unfortunately, the series doesn’t elaborate on Hunk’s history prior to his time at the Galaxy Garrison at all. We don’t even get his full name at any point. (Or even a real name, if you assume that nobody would actually name a child Hunk.) The biggest hint we get into his past is when he visualizes spam musubi and pineapple during a mental training exercise, which might maybe point to a background in Hawaii. Other than that, nada!
So, for Hunk, everything starts at the Galaxy Garrison, which seems to be a combination of military operation and school for future space explorers/workers. Hunk himself is an engineering specialist, part of a three-member team along with Lance (the pilot) and Pidge (the communications specialist). What he’s actually doing here is anybody’s guest, because the kid was not built for flying. He’s super prone to motion sickness, and Lance’s reckless flying causes him to barf in the simulator. It’s only one of the little crew’s many problems, though, and they’re chewed out appropriately.
Although he seems wary and a little shame-faced, the opening scene is apparently not Hunk’s first run-in with disapproval at the Garrison. He states later that following Lance’s suggestions land them in the principal’s office with some frequency. Regardless, he sticks with Lance, and their breaking curfew that night takes an unexpected turn. After accidentally meeting up with Pidge, the three witness a crash that turns into an escape. They help former classmate Keith rescue long-lost space hero Shiro, and by morning they’re searching for something out in the desert.
That something turns out to be a giant, robotic lion, coveted by a mysterious alien force. With Lance behind the controls, the lion soon spirits them far from Earth, through deep space, and finally to the alien planet Arus. There, they access the Castle of Lions and free its only inhabitants, Princess Allura and her royal advisor, Coran. (And the mouse family, of course!) They reveal that the universe is under siege by the ruthless Galra Empire and that the Blue Lion, hidden on Earth, is part of a team of five that forms the universe’s greatest weapon, Voltron. And guess what, Earth Kiddies? You’re the pilots, now!
Hunk is assigned to the Yellow Lion, one of the legs of Voltron, known to require emotional strength, compassion, and support. It’s also hidden on another alien planet, already under control by the Galra, so Hunk and Lance have to go pick it up. They manage, but just barely, and Hunk soon discovers the finesse-filled technique of bodily smashing his robot into things to win the game.
With all of the Lions recovered, the paladins’ work is more or less cut out for them, not that it’s easy. They train hard in an attempt to learn about synching with their Lions and with each other to form Voltron, and from there to learn about all of its capabilities. They face numerous attacks from the Galra, internal and external, while they deal with their own conflicts and issues.
Hunk’s greatest point of personal growth throughout the story is during the Balmera arc. When the crystal that powers their castle/ship is destroyed in a Galra attack, Coran takes Hunk to a nearby Balmera, which is a living planet that naturally grows the crystals that power Altean technology. This Balmera has a problem, though. It’s already been taken over by the Galra, who’ve mined is ruthlessly and for so long that its inhabitants, rock-like aliens, do not even understand the concept of being free from the Empire. Hunk, who’s had severe doubts about having been sucked into this situation, is moved by their situation and gains a better understanding of what’s at stake for those under Galra rule. He forms a friendship with one Balmerans in particular, Shay, and he promises to return and liberate her people. He then doggedly persists on and pursues this goal until Voltron is able to return to the Balmera and not only fight off the Galra, but restore life to the dying creature. From there, Hunk’s doubts about fighting in deep space are dispelled. He’s a true Paladin of Voltron, on a mission to free the universe from Galra tyranny.
Throughout the rest of the series, he’s largely support, as he’s meant to be. When Allura is captured during an infiltration mission, Hunk is one of those who insists that they go back for her despite her own willingness to sacrifice herself. This mission ultimately turns into the final battle of the season, after which the Lions are forcibly separated from the castle and plunged through wormholes into parts unknown.
(Which, here and now, happens to be the MoM-verse.)
PERSONALITY:
Hunk’s a prototypical Gentle Giant. He’s instantly portrayed in the series as cautious and something of a follower, sticking with Lance despite complaining about his tendency to get them into trouble. Upon discovery of the Blue Lion, he’s quick to suggest that they simply give it up to the aliens who are after it, negating their chances of getting involved in something potentially terrible and dangerous. He has a obvious desire to avoid confrontation and danger and often has a general air of being nervous, as is pointed out by Pidge at one point.
He’s not incapable of courage and strength, though! He’s noted immediately, when assigned by Allura to the Yellow Lion, for his compassion and ability to connect with others and lift them up (a good quality when you’re a leg). He’s easily friendly and open with others, plainly honest, and quick to joke or console. He forms attachments without reserve and wants the best for those that he cares about. He’s able to overcome his avoidant nature when those he cares for are in trouble. Leaning on this is what allows him to become a more realized Defender of the Universe. Once he realizes the full extent of the Galra’s rule and dominion over innocent people, he no longer desires to flee his position and return to Earth, and even becomes irate when he feels he’s inhibited in his mission for frivolities. He genuinely wants to help others and will do whatever he can in spite of his own fears.
Outside of the personality required of a Paladin, Hunk’s also a possessor of cultivated interests. He’s the team’s mechanic and seems very capable and well-versed in various equipments, including those on non-Earth ships, which seems to point him out as a quick study. He also gains a familiarity with Arusian plant-life in order to cook palatable food for himself and his fellow Paladins, with food being another of his particular interests.
Overall, Hunk lives up to the emotional ideals of being a Paladin, even if he’s still working on some of the required confrontational aspects. He functions as the team’s heart, interested in keeping everybody together and keeping moral high. While he may still shiver in his space boots occasionally, he’s willing to get down to business with there are planets to free and people to liberate. He’s gon’ fight the good fight!
POWER:
Paladin of Voltron: Hunk’s got a yellow-themed space uniform complete with built-in communication link, pop-up shield, and a bayard, which turns into a Big Honkin’ Laser Cannon.
Yellow Lion: Like the Paladins who have some to MoM before him, Hunk will be in the company of a downsized Yellow Lion robot. Instead of being super giant, it’ll be regular ol’ lion-sized.
Earth Manipulation: The Yellow Paladin is linked to the earth, therefore Hunk’s non-canon power will play up this connection. Over time, with a lot of care and learning, Hunk will be able to go all low-key earth-bendy on stuff based on will combined with movement.

[ Hello, Network! Here is a cool dude on a beach, a bulky bro leaning against the side of a bulky robot lion. Once he’s sure that the camera is rolling, he beams. ]
Uh. Right. Hey, guys! My name’s Hunk. I just got here a few days ago, and I’m kinda just… Well, okay, first I should clarify that I was in an off-Earth situation, so now I’m working on soaking up as much in Earthly delights as possible. So, duh, I’m hitting up the beach right off the bat. I was thinking about giving some Florida surfing a shot, but it’s not looking too good, so yeah. I’m just chilling in the sand, no big deal.
I guess what I turned this thing on to address is this: What do you consider the best thing on Earth? We might not have a lot of time to be here, so I’m making a comprehensive list of to-do stuff.
Also? If anybody can confirm the outside-of-the-normal-time-stream part of being here, that’d be great. It’d bite if I’m already indulging like crazy and it turns out the universe, or at least my universe, is still in trouble. That’d be a bummer.
Peace, guys!
